The Department of Physics stands at the forefront of cutting-edge research in emerging areas of science and technology. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to offering a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses both foundational principles and engineering applications of physics to first-year B.Tech. students. Over time, it has expanded its academic offerings to include advanced M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, reflecting its commitment to fostering expertise across various domains of physics.

The department’s research landscape is rich and diverse, covering a wide spectrum of specialties. These include pioneering investigations in Solid State Gas Sensors, Carrier Transport in Thin Films, Ferroelectrics and related materials, Multiferroics, Solar Energy Materials, Liquid Crystals, Semiconductor Nanostructure and Devices, Polymer Nanocomposites, Solar Photocatalysis, Energy storage devices and materials, Nanoionics-based resistive switching devices, Theoretical Physics, Theoretical Nuclear and Particle Physics, and more.

The M.Sc. program, spanning two years, offers a platform for students to delve deeply into these specialized fields, equipping them with advanced knowledge and practical skills. Meanwhile, the Ph.D. program provides a rigorous research environment for scholars to pursue innovative investigations, contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge in their chosen areas of expertise.

The vision of the Department of Physics, National Institute of Technology Silchar is as follows:

  • Our vision is to be a model of excellence in multidisciplinary branches of science and research by producing world class graduates prepared for lifelong engagements in the rapidly changing field of science and related field.
  • Our Department should be remembered in providing excellent Mathematical skills to its UG, PG and Ph. D. students.

The mission of the Department of Physics, National Institute of Technology Silchar is as follows:

  • Our mission is to impart quality education to students and provide a comprehensive understanding of Physics, built upon basic fundamental of science and technology and to provide quality manpower to meet the future challenges.
  • To provide in significant research.
  • To attend the mathematical needs of the institute and the community.
  • To provide students (UG/PG) with a wide spectrum of valuable courses with rigorous training/tutorials that enables them to pursue their future.
  • To make Engineers to develop the physical thoughts and applying it to solve complex engineering problems, designing mathematical models to meet the requirements.
  • To encourage both research scholars and faculty members of the Department to be the exposures of different research environments in India and abroad.
