About the Physics Department
Established in 1967 as part of the Regional Engineering College, NIT Silchar’s Department of Physics has remained a cornerstone of the institute’s academic landscape. Offering postgraduate (M.Sc.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs, alongside fundamental courses for B.Tech. 1st year students, the department is committed to delivering quality education and fostering cutting-edge research across various branches of physics. Led by a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members, the department covers a wide array of research areas, including Theoretical and Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Theoretical Nuclear and Particle Physics, Photonics and Optoelectronics, High Energy Physics, and Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The faculty members are actively engaged in teaching, research, and mentoring students, contributing significantly to the academic pursuits of the institution.
Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for both theoretical and experimental research, the department provides students with hands-on experience in conducting experiments and simulations, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.
